Classes at Studio 22

Studio 22 offers a wide variety of weekly classes for students of all ages and abilities which run from September through May/beginning of June (varying about 30-34 weeks of lessons).

Intro to Dance (ages 2.5-4)

This weekly 45-minute class is dedicated to dance fundamentals, aiming to enhance gross motor skills, and initiate the development of fine motor skills through the use of props, imagery, and music. The curriculum covers diverse tempos, spatial awareness, and the artistry of movement. Students will not only build physical strength but also cultivate emotional and social skills, and essential "classroom skills" vital for school, including turn-taking, following directions, attentive listening, sharing, and effective communication.

Independence is fostered as students leave their caregivers at the door and enter the room on their own. While it is encouraged for dancers of this age group to be potty-trained, it is not mandatory. Caregivers are requested to wait in the reception area in case a child requires assistance

Students will perform a ballet dance in the annual recital.

​

Intro to Dance Short Session will run for 6 or 8 weeks. Short Session classes will be held during the day (either morning or early afternoon). Please email studio for next session dates.

Ballet / Tap Combination (ages 4-6)

This weekly class focuses on the basic skills of Tap and Ballet.  In the tap segment, students are introduced to the fundamentals of tap, as well as, across the floor patterns, and center floor choreography.  In the ballet segment, students will learn about the positions of the feet, body alignment, and be introduced to the fundamentals of ballet.  In both disciplines, students will learn about various tempos, spatial awareness, and grace of movement.  Watch as they develop self-esteem, social skills, and classroom discipline. 

 

Students will perform a ballet dance and a tap dance in the annual recital. 

Combo – Jazz & Ballet Combination (ages 4-6)

This weekly class focuses on the basic skills in Jazz and Ballet.  In the jazz segment, students are introduced to movements such as stretching and isolations, as well as, across the floor patterns, and center floor choreography.  In the ballet segment, students will learn about the positions of the feet, body alignment, and be introduced to the fundamentals of ballet.  In both disciplines, students will learn about various tempos, spatial awareness, and grace of movement.  Watch as they develop self-esteem, social skills, and classroom discipline.

 

Students will perform a ballet dance and a jazz dance in the annual recital.

Mini Acrobatics (ages 4-6)

This weekly class focuses on the building strength, balance, and flexibility.  Students will gain confidence through skill games, the use of props, and basic dance steps including locomotor movements and ballet basics.  Basic acro skills such as forward rolls, headstands, handstands, cartwheels, and backbends will be introduced in this class.

 

Year-long classes will perform one dance in the annual recital.

Mini Hip Hop (ages 4-6)

This weekly class is high-energy!  Watch as students improve their cardio, strength, and balance.  Hip hop infuses the latest styles of commercial, street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements.  Classes include conditioning, warm-up, stretch, isolations, across the floor progressions, and choreography.

 

Mini's hip hop class will perform one dance in the annual recital.

Acrobatics (ages 6 & up)

Acro dance is a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character and its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics.  Acro dance technique includes limbering, tumbling, partnering, flexibility (contortion), strength, and balancing.  Skills such as cartwheels, aerials, handstands, headstands, walk-overs and more are taught in this class.

Acro requires dancers to be trained in both dance and acrobatic skills.  Many of the dance movements in acro are found in ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary and modern dance styles.  Students are encouraged to take a dance class in addition to their acro class (although not a requirement).  The Acrobatic Arts certified teacher follows proper progressions to take students from one level to the next safely to prevent injury.

 

Acro classes will perform one dance in the annual recital.

Ballet (ages 6 & up)

These classes focus on barre work, center floor work, and progressions, with a strong emphasis on proper technique and terminology.  Classes will also explore the history of ballet and study various classical ballets and their choreography.  Advanced dancers will be required to take Ballet twice a week (Level 3 & 4).

Studio 22 has the privilege of having a certified Cecchetti Ballet teacher on staff.  The Cecchetti Method is a progressive system of training for dancers from a beginner level to a professional level.  The Method embodies qualities that are essential to the dancer; balance, poise, strength, elevation, elasticity, musicality and artistry.  Cecchetti USA has established a syllabus carefully orchestrated, containing exercises that build in complexity, ensuring that each new movement is introduced from a fundamental approach.  Cecchetti USA offers exams for students that are designed to give students specific goals to work toward and to maintain standards of development consistent with international standards.  Please see the ballet teacher for more information regarding exam opportunities.  Ballet classes will perform one dance in the annual recital.  For more information on the Cecchetti Method, please visit www.cecchettiusa.org.

Pointe (ages 12 & up with teacher approval)

To prepare for Pointe class, dancers must be at least 12 years old, with a minimum of 2 years of current technical ballet training.  For the safety of the student, the ballet instructor will determine if a student is ready to go up on pointe shoes. 

​

These classes will focus on proper alignment and muscle usage.  Dancers will learn barre exercises, center exercises, and across the floor patterns.  Progressive exercises will help students build strength and confidence safely.

​

Pointe dancers will perform their skills in the annual recital either as a separate dance, or a part of a production as determined by the teacher.

Tap (ages 6 & up)

This weekly class focuses on the fundamentals of tap.  Classes will cover style, rhythm, and proper technique during the warmup, center floor work, across the floor patterns, and choreography.  Students will learn about musical phrasing and timing and how to create percussive sounds with their feet and bodies.  Classes will explore tap roots, exposing students to the history of tap and how it developed. 

 

Tap classes will perform one dance in the annual recital.

Jazz (ages 6 & up)

Jazz classes are based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movements and include a proper warm-up and stretch, isolations, across the floor progressions, and choreography.  Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street, and Contemporary to develop a well-rounded dancer.  Classes will explore jazz roots, exposing students to the history of jazz and how it developed. 

 

Jazz classes will perform one dance in the annual recital.

Contemporary (ages 6 & up)

This weekly class combines elements of ballet, modern, lyrical, and jazz.  Classes will have a heavy emphasis on ballet technique with the combined modern movements of contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation.  Partner work such as lifting and weight sharing will also be covered. A proper warm-up and stretch, across the floor patterns, center floor technique, and choreography will be included each class.  Watch as students begin to develop expressive movements and explore realistic and abstract ways to move across the stage.

 

Contemporary classes will perform one dance in the annual recital. 

 Hip Hop (ages 6 & up)

This weekly class is high-energy!  Hip hop infuses the latest styles of commercial, street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Classes include conditioning, warm-up, stretch, isolations, across the floor progressions, and choreography.

 

Hip hop class will perform one dance in the annual recital.

Modern (ages 6 & up)

This weekly class for levels 3 & 4 combines elements of modern technique and floor work, as well as partnering and lifting. Classes will have a heavy emphasis on ballet technique with the combined modern movements of contract-release, weight sharing, and improvisation. This class will incorporate multiple modern styles such as Limon, Horton, Graham, and Cunningham techniques, just to name a few. Students will learn the history of modern and where the roots of modern dance came from. A proper warm-up and stretch, across the floor patterns, center floor technique, and choreography will be included each class. Watch as students begin to develop expressive movements and explore realistic and abstract ways to move across the stage.

 

Modern classes will perform one dance in the annual recital. 

Dance Sampler (ages 5-9) 6 or 8-Week Sessions

This class meets weekly for 6 to 8 weeks.  Each class we will explore a new genre of dance.  Dancers will have an introductory lesson in Jazz, Contemporary, Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop and Acro.  (Class styles subject to change.)  A proper warm-up and stretch, across the floor patterns, and center floor technique is included in each class.  

​

This is a great class for students to explore multiple genres of dance to see which one they like the most.  It is also a great way for a teacher to evaluate which level of dance class would be the most appropriate for the summer or fall class placements.

Adult Dance (ages 18 & up)

These classes meet weekly and is open to all levels.  Adults ages 18 & up are welcome.  Classes are offered in Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop.  Classes will combine a warmup, across the floor and center floor technique, and short dance combinations. 

​

This is a great way to be in a supportive environment and have fun while learning some new moves! Adults are not required to perform in the annual recital, but the opportunity is available.
